Graeme Knowles

Graeme Paul Knowles CVO ( born September 25, 1951 in Woburn, Bedfordshire ) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 2003 to 2007 Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England.

Knowles was born the son of Stan Knowles and his wife Grace. His parents lived in the Westfield Road in Dunstable in the County of Bedfordshire. His father was headmaster at the Eaton Bray School. His mother worked as a school secretary. Knowles has another brother. He first visited the Regent House and County Beecroft Primary School, then from 1963 to 1970 the Dunstable Grammar School. He studied theology at King's College London; his final year he graduated at St Augustine 's College, Canterbury. In 1974 he was ordained a deacon; In 1975 the priest. His priestly career began from 1974 to 1979 as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Peter -in- Thanet Church in Broadstairs in Kent. Subsequently, he was from 1979 Precentor ( Precentor ) and "Senior Curate " at the Parish Church of St Peter -at- Leeds, Leeds. In 1981 he became Precentor ( Precentor ) and Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary; canon ) at the Portsmouth Cathedral. He was also Chaplain ( Chaplain ) on the Portsmouth Cathedral. From 1985 to 1987 he practiced over the position of the "Chapter Clerk "; He was responsible in this function as a church official for administrative matters in the cathedral chapter. In 1987 he became pastor (Vicar ) of Leigh Park; in addition, he took over from 1990, the function of the land Dean of Havant ( Rural Dean of Havant ). He was Archdeacon of Portsmouth 1993 ( Archdeacon of Portsmouth, head of a parish church ). He held until 1999 this office.

In December 1998, Knowles was appointed dean of Carlisle ( Dean of Carlisle ). A position he took over from January 1999 to 2003. In November 2003, Knowles was, in place of Noel Jones, Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England appointed. On December 4, 2003, he was of David Hope, the Archbishop of York, consecrated in York Minster to the bishop; his solemn enthronement took place on 17 January 2004 in Peel Cathedral in Peel on the Isle of Man instead. On 20 September 2007 Knowles St Paul's Cathedral ( Dean of St Paul's ) was appointed as the successor of John Moses, who had gone into retirement in 2006 by a Letters Patent to the dean. On November 1, 2011 Knowles resigned from the office of Dean of St Paul's. Knowles ' resignation was related to the antikapitalististischen protests of the movement Occupy London, who had been left behind for weeks and demonstrated in front of St Paul 's Cathedral in tents. Knowles had let the St Paul 's Cathedral temporarily closed for the believers. After the cathedral chapter had decided the violent removal of protesters by security forces of the London Authorities, Knowles resigned due to strong counter- reactions.

In his retirement, Knowles moved back to Bury St Edmunds; where he has been active since end of April 2012 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. It was officially launched on 29 April 2012 by Bishop Nigel Stock in a solemn Mass at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, in Bury St Edmunds in his office. Knowles is an Honorary Chaplain ( Honorary Chaplain ) of the Royal Naval Reserve.

Knowles is married. His wife Susan was a teacher of English at the Girls' Public Day School Trust ( GPDST ) School in Southsea. His hobbies include vacation and leisure, the novels of EF Benson of, collecting and singing of the Victorian and Edwardian ballads and songs, architecture, good food and the enjoyment of good wine.
