Noel Jones (bishop of Sodor and Man)

Noel Debroy Jones, also Noël Jones, CB ( born December 25, 1932 in Wales; † August 25, 2009 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire ) was a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1989 to 2003 Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England.

Jones was born the son of Brinley and Gwendoline Jones. He attended Haberdashers ' Monmouth School West. He studied at St David's College, University of Wales Lampeter. To prepare for the priesthood, he attended the Wells Theological College. 1955 was his ordination. His priestly career began as a vicar ( Curate ) from 1955 to 1957 at St James' Church in Tredegar and then at St Mark's Church in the Diocese of Monmouth Newport. From 1960 to 1962 he was pastor (Vicar ) in Kano in Nigeria. In 1962, he appeared as a Navy Chaplain ( Naval Chaplain ) in the Royal Navy. It was in this capacity in Brunei (1962) and Borneo (1963 ) stationed. He completed a training NCO in the Royal Marines and was stationed in 1967 with the 42 Commando of the Royal Marines at Aden. He was from 1974 to 1977 worked as a "Staff Chaplain " in the British Ministry of Defence (Ministry of Defence ). In 1983 he took over the office courtesy of an honorary chaplain to the Queen ( Honorary Chaplain to the Queen); he held until 1989 this office. From 1984 to 1989 he was Chaplain of the Fleet ( chaplain of the fleet ) and Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of the Royal Navy. In 1986 he was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath.

1989 Jones left the Royal Navy. In 1989 he was, as the successor of Arthur Attwell, Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England. As Bishop of Sodor and Man Jones had an "ex officio " seat in the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. In April 2003, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Sodor and Man was Graeme Knowles.

He was also a member of the Department of Education (1989-1991) and the War Pensions Committee ( 1989-2003 ). He was member of the Trusteeship Council in 1989 ( Trustee ) of King William 's College on the Isle of Man.

Jones was a largely conservative churchman; He said, inter alia, to against the Sunday opening and the opening of shops on Sundays and public holidays from. He was a representative of Anglo - Catholicism. However, a member of Forward in Faith, a conservative union of the High Church within the Church of England, he denied.

In his retirement he lived in North Yorkshire. In 1969 he married his wife Joyce Barbara Leelavathy Arulanandam married, he had met during his time in the Royal Navy in the Far East in Malaysia. From the marriage were two children, a son and a daughter. His hobbies included squash, swimming, music, fishing, family, formerly rugby as an active player. In the spring of 2009, Jones bladder cancer had been found. Jones died on 28 August 2009 at the age of 76 years at St Catherine 's Hospice in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The funeral service followed by cremation ceremony took place on 14 September 2009 in All Saints Church in York. The main celebrant was Bishop Robert Ladds; the sermon was delivered by David Hope, former Archbishop of York.
