Lampeter

Lampeter ( Welsh: Llanbedr Pont Steffan ) is a Welsh town with 1,989 inhabitants ( 2001) in the county of Ceredigion. The locals call their city Llanbedr (or Llambed ). The place is home to the University of Wales, Lampeter. The city is located in South West Wales at the confluence of the River Teifi and the Afon Dulas. Lampeter is twinned with Saint- Germain- sur- Moine, Pays de la Loire.

History

Lampeter was in the former county of Cardiganshire; this was one of the royal counties of Edward I after his victory over Llywelyn the Last ( Llywelyn A Llyw Olaf) Cilmeri in 1282 were created; Lampeter was thus under the direct rule of the Crown. However, this had little impact on the cultural life of the city, the Welsh language and culture. The town charter was granted in 1284; and as a result the market right was conferred by other documents; Market and fairs were held in the High Street until the 1930s, as some of Dali's horse market.

The Castle

The oldest documents prove that Owain Gwynedd built the royal castle Pont Steffan (Stephen 's Bridge ) in 1187. The remains of the building were later foundations for the building of Charles Robert Cockerell | College, which is part of the University of Wales today.

University

Lampeter is the smallest university town in both Wales and the United Kingdom. Rail transport
