University of Wales, Lampeter

The University of Wales in Lampeter is the oldest university in Wales and one of the oldest in the UK. It was founded in 1822 as St David 's College.

The university has two campuses:

History

The St. David 's College was founded in 1822 on the initiative of Thomas Burgess. He was Bishop of St. David's and wanted the Welsh enable higher education, without having to visit the distant and expensive universities of Cambridge and Oxford.

The landowner John Scandred Harford from Gloucestershire donated 1820, the 12,000 square meter Castlefield at Lampeter. There Burgess had built the college. The building was also continued, as Burgess Lampeter left to become Bishop of Salisbury. The college was financed by donations from the people. The building was ready for occupancy in 1827, the college opened on St. David 's Day for the first 25 students. 1852 acquired the College the rights for the Bachelor of Divinity ( Theology), 1865 for the Bachelor of Arts.

20th century

In 1971 at the college of the federal University of Wales and became the St. David 's University College ( SDUC ). At that time many more courses were offered, but theology remained the focus. In 1996, the university was renamed at his own request in University of Wales Lampeter. Today ( 2007), the University of theology, religious studies, philosophy, archeology, anthropology, English, and English history has specialized. Other topics such as the liberal arts, social science, and film and media studies, business management and Sinology win but increasingly important.
