Granite Peak (Montana)

The Granite Peak is a mountain in the Beartooth Mountains, a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains in Montana, United States. With a height of 3904 meters it is the highest point of Montana.

Location

The summit of Granite Peak is located in Custer National Forest, a National Forest under the management of the United States Forest Service, about 15 kilometers north of the border of Wyoming and about 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Columbus. The region is shown under the name Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness - as Wilderness Area, the class of strict nature reserves in the United States.

Ascent

The Granite Peak is one of the hardest -to-climb among the highest points in each of the 48 Continental United States. Due to difficult terrain with climbs and unmarked routes ascents is only recommended for experienced climbers, what should be scheduled in about two days. It is to be expected at any time of year with snow. The Granite Peak was first climbed in 1923 by Elers cooking after the attempts of some other climbers had failed. He was thus the last highest point of any state, which was mounted.
