Grant Allen

Grant Allen, short for Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen ( born February 24, 1848 Alwington near Kingston, Ontario, Canada, † October 25, 1899 in Hindhead, Surrey, UK) was an author.

Life

Allen created in 1876 a very diverse body of work. It includes poems, essays, popular scientific articles, writings on botany and theology as well as novels, including works with criminological impact.

As the son of an Irish Protestant clergyman and distinguished scholars, he is of Irish and French-Canadian descent. He was educated partly in America and partly in France. Since he won a scholarship, he studied classical languages ​​at Merton College, Oxford. The university career was difficult. On the one hand he had a sick wife, on the other hand he did not have great finances. He graduated in 1871 " with honor ".

As a professor of philosophy he taught from 1873 Ethics, Latin and Greek at a newly established university for blacks in Spanish Town, Jamaica. For lack of students but this was soon resolved and Allen returned to England in 1876 to live in the future from writing. He was a friend and neighbor of Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes.
