Gregor Erhart

Gregor Erhart (* 1470 in Ulm, † 1540 in Augsburg) was carver at the transition from the late Gothic to Renaissance. He is a son of Michel Erhart, Erhart brother of Bernhard, father of Paul Erhart and the Ulm School will be assigned.

Life

Initially, he worked with his father in the workshop, then wandered but in 1494 in the neighboring free imperial city of Augsburg from. It is believed that he has received a contract for the monastery and the church of St. Moritz. He lived in the home of his brother Adolf Daucher, who worked as a " Kistler " ( cabinetmaker ).

In 1496 he received the Master right. He is referred to a little later a chronicler as " Ingeniosus magister ". 1531 Gregor Erhart gave his well- thriving Augsburg workshop to his son Paul Erhart. Nine years later, he died at the age of 70 years.

Assessment

Hans Gregor Erhart Koepf referred to as " the greatest artist of the millennium " in Ulm.

  • Madonna statue in St. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg
  • Schutzmantelmadonna for the high altar of the monastery Kaisheim, 1502-1504 ( 1672 dismantled, later destroyed in the Sculpture Collection Berlin, 1945)
  • Magdalene figure (now the Louvre, Paris)
  • Bought crucifix from the years 1510/1520, since 1808 in Öllingen, the then parish priest in Ulm as Demolitionsware.

The figures of the high altar in Blaubeuren monastery were variously attributed to Gregor Erhart, apply today but when his father Michel Erhart and his studio work. However, an involvement Gregor Erhart at some figures of the altar is quite possible.
