The rural community Grímsnes above Grafningur ( Isl Grímsnes -og Grafningshreppur ) is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland in southwest Iceland.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 442 inhabitants. The largest settlement is Sólheimar with 79 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipal area is not contiguous and is divided into three parts.

In the south of the southern part of the municipality is the Hill Ingólfsfjall; in the east of the southern part is the the panel Vörðufell volcano and the lake Hestvatn. The Grímsnes volcanic system and the Hvítá dominate the landscape. In the north of the southern part of the township from the lake Þingvallavatn which flows through the suction through the Úlfljótsvatn and Álftavatn, and the Apavatn. Between the Þingvallavatn and the place Hveragerði, which forms a separate municipality lies the volcano Hrómundartindur; west of this the Hengill is located with its elongated volcanic system.

The middle part of the municipality forms a narrow strip, which is surrounded by the municipality Bláskógabyggð. To the north of this strip is located the mountain Skjaldbreiður.

In the northern part of the municipality of glaciers Þórisjökull and part of Langjökull lies with its tributary glaciers Geitlandsjökull.

History

The municipality was created on 1 June 1998 resulted from the merger of the two rural communities Grímsnes ( Grímsneshreppur ) and Grafningur ( Grafningshreppur ).

The settlement Írafoss above Ljósafoss who still had 15 inhabitants in 1997, is now left.
