Guil

Cataract in the middle reaches

The Guil is a whitewater river in France, which runs in the region Provence- Alpes -Cote d' Azur in the Hautes -Alpes. It rises in the French part of the Cozie Alps from the small mountain lake Lac Lestio, on the northwest flank of the Summit Pointe Gastaldi ( 3210 m), in the municipality of Ristolas, near the Italian border. It drains initially to northwest, then turns southwest and breaks in its course with steep gradients by several gorge sections of the valley of the Durance by, where it flows as a left tributary at Mont- Dauphin to 52 kilometers. On its way, the river passes through the Regional Natural Park of Queyras. A section of the river is dammed by a dam to generate energy.

Tourist

The Guil is a kayak whitewater river with difficulties in the predominantly upper portion of whitewater difficulty scale. The most common problems are the " moat ", a cramp-like break below the Château du Queyras, the " Combe du Queyras " with the " Guiltreppen " (see also photo at right, the so-called " veil " cases ) and the " slot ". Northeast of Guillestre the Guil is dammed and is locked in the reservoir area to drive through. Below the dam a Befahrung to the confluence with the Durance is possible in case of difficulties in the lower part of whitewater difficulty scale, where the interesting small ravine between Guillestre and Mont -Dauphin is traversed.

In the mountains of the upper reaches winter sport is played.
