Guillermo Pérez (taekwondo)

Guillermo Pérez Sandoval ( born October 14, 1979 in Uruapan ) is a former Mexican Taekwondo practitioners, who was active in the flyweight. In 2008, he became the first Mexican Olympic champion in Taekwondo.

Pérez played his first international title fights at the Pan Championship 2003 in Quito, where he was eliminated in the opening fight. Three years later he took in Madrid in the class up to 58 kg for the first time at the World Cup finals and reached the second round. The breakthrough in the international forefront finally succeeded Pérez at the 2007 World Championships in Beijing. He reached the finals and won silver with his first international medal. The following year he competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. With two wins flyweight to 58 kilograms, it struggled before the semi-finals, where he defeated Chutchawal Khawlaor. In the final, it was against Yulis Mercedes to fight end in a draw, by referee decision Pérez won and became the first Mexican Olympic champion in Taekwondo. Following the Games Pérez played only a few international competitions. In Monterrey, he still won at the Pan Championships 2010, a silver medal, after he ended his active career.

Pérez was inspired in his childhood of Bruce Lee. At six years old he came to taekwondo and started for the club since Tecnológico de Uruapan.
