Gulf of Saint-Malo

The Gulf of Saint- Malo (French: Golfe de Saint- Malo, English: Gulf of Saint- Malo ) is a bay of the southern French part of the English Channel. The name derives from the bay is the town of Saint- Malo on the Rance estuary. The Gulf is bordered to the south of the coast between Saint- Brieuc and Avranches ( with the Côte de Penthièvre in the West and of the Emerald Coast - Emerald Coast - in the central region ). To the west of the existing mostly of cliffs section of Saint- Brieuc limited to the Bréhat Islands ( Côte de Goélo ) the Gulf of Saint- Malo. In the East there are often long sandy beaches of the Cotentin Peninsula, which limit the Gulf. To the north and northwest of the transition to the broad western part of the Channel or the Atlantic is fluid. The southwest corner of the Gulf is a bay of Saint- Brieuc ( Baie de Saint- Brieuc ) refers to the Southeast corner of the lively abbey of Mont -Saint -Michel is called Baie du Mont -Saint -Michel. The area of the Gulf is about 5000 km ² (east- west extension of about 100 km, north to south 45 to 75 miles) The coasts of the Gulf of Saint- Malo are highly stressed by the tides. Thus, the tidal range at the Rance tidal power plant between Dinard and Saint- Malo has a height of more than eight meters. The shores of the Gulf are partly very rugged and have numerous capes and coves on. At low tide large parts of the bank area dry up, especially in the vicinity of river mouths. Between the towns of Pirou and Saint-Germain- sur -Ay the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin extends to the shoreline.
