Gunnison National Forest

The Gunnison National Forest is a 6900 km ² large National Forest in the western U.S. state of Colorado in the counties Mesa, Gunnison, Hinsdale, and Saguache. It is bordered on the north by the White River National Forest, in the west on the Grand Mesa National Forest and on the Uncompahgre National Forest, on the east by the San Isabel National Forest and on the south by the Rio Grande National Forest. In the forest are the two wilderness areas Maroon Bells -Snowmass Wilderness, located in the White River and the San Isabel National Forest and the Collegiate Wilderness, located in the San Isabel National Forest. Theodore Roosevelt declared on 13 June 1905 as Forest National Forest. The National Forest was named after the explorer John W. Gunnison.
