Guram Sagaradze (wrestler)

Guram ( " Guliko " ) Sagaradse (Georgian გურამ ( გულიკო ) საღარაძე; born March 21, 1939 in Tbilisi ) is a former Soviet wrestler from the Georgian SSR, two-time world champion and winner of the silver medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in free style in welterweight.

Career

Guliko Sagaradse comes from Georgia. There he began as a teenager with the rings and has been delegated by the first regional successes for Ringer center in Tbilisi. It matured here up to be an outstanding freestyle wrestler.

In 1961, he first drew attention to himself when he saw the multiple world champion Emam Ali Habibi defeated in a battle Grusinia comparison against Iran on points. In 1963, he was then first used by the Soviet Wrestling Federation at an international championship. At the World Championships in Sofia, he completed while a convincing debut and was charged with four wins and a draw against Ismail Ogan from Turkey World Champion.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he remained undefeated in six fights but won the silver medal but only because he wrestled only draw against Ismail Ogan and against Mohammad- Ali Sanatkaran while Ogan won against Sanatkaran and thus Olympic champion.

At the World Championships 1965 in Manchester then Guliko was the best again. Ogan was no longer there and Guliko ranged four wins and a draw against Sanatkaran to win the title. At the World Cup 1966 in Toledo / USA Guliko was vice-champion, because he lost in the final against Mahmut Atalay from Turkey and also in the World Cup 1967 in New Delhi, he took second place. He won it indeed against defending champion Mahmut Atalay, but had to suffer a loss to all surprising Frenchman Daniel Robin.

At the European Championships in 1968 in Skopje Guliko only came 3rd place, which he lost by five wins against Károly Bajkó from Hungary. This third place was the Soviet sports officials too little and cost Guliko the part in the Olympics in Mexico City. The Soviet Union continued there a Juri Schakmuradow, but only came on the 6th Place.

After ending his career as an active wrestler was Guliko Sagaradse coach in Tbilisi. One of his best pupils was the multiple world champion in free style heavyweight David Gobedischwili.
