David Gobejishvili

David Nikolaevich Gobedischwili (Georgian დავით გობეჯიშვილი, born January 3, 1963 in Kutaisi ) is a former Georgian wrestler who competed for the Soviet Union and the CIS.

Career

David Gobedischwili grew up in Georgia and began at age 16 with the rings. After initial successes the talent that had grown at a size of two meters into a full blown Superschwergewichtler of 110 kg body weight, was delegated to the sports club Dinamo Tbilisi. There he was trained by Guliko Sagaradse and Alexander Maissuradze, both even former world-class wrestler. He wrestled exclusively in free style. At 22, he began his international career Ringer at the European Championships in 1985 in Leipzig. In Leipzig he immediately won the European title in the super heavyweight division. In the final battle, he defeated the Bulgarian Atanas Atanassov doing 3-1 points. In his pool he had previously defeated Andreas Schröder from Jena 3-0 points. Also at the World Championships the same year in Budapest, he triumphed in the super heavyweight. Among the defeated counted here also the Olympic champion from 1984 Bruce Baumgartner of the USA, who was to become his main competitors in the coming years.

In 1986, David was only used at the World Championships, which took place again in Budapest. In the final he was Bruce Baumgartner over again, he lost to time on points. In 1987, he was with no international championships at the start. The title still went to the Soviet Union, there were victorious at the European Championships Zaza Tourmanidze and at the World Championships Aslan Chadarzew.

Aslan Chadarzew also launched at the European Championships in 1988. During the Olympic Games in Seoul, he came back into use and was before his long-time rival Bruce Baumgartner and Andreas Schroeder Olympic champion.

In 1989, his rival Ossetian Aslan Chadarzew the Soviet Union represented again at the international championships. In the 1990 World Cup in Tokyo Gobedischwili again won the world title. In the final he defeated Bruce Baumgartner just on points.

In 1991, David was with no international championships there. The Soviet Union continued with Oleg Naniew and Gennadi Schilzow two new wrestlers, because Aslan Chadarzew 1990 was killed in an accident. Naniew and Schilzow occupied at the European and World Championships each 2nd place.

When the young Alexei Medvedev as representatives of the CIS at the European Championships in 1992 in Kaposvar even came only to 8th place, one hand for the Olympic Games in Barcelona back to David Gobedischwili. This struck in a fight in the pool Andreas Schröder just 4-3 points, but was defeated in the battle for the pool victory against Bruce Baumgartner, who then also for the second time Olympic champion. In the battle for the bronze David Mahmut Demir from Turkey defeated.

After these Olympics David ended his career as an active wrestler. He is now engaged in business.
