Gurk, Carinthia

Gurk ( Slow Krka) is a market town in Carinthia with 1249 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Sankt Veit an der Glan. Supra-regional importance was the place back as bishop of the diocese of Gurk and by the Romanesque Gurk Cathedral from 1140 on a foundation of the country's mistress Hemma of Gurk ( 995-1045 ).

Geographical location

The market Gurk is surrounded by mountain meadows and extended high forest and is a center of the little populated Gurktals dar. downstream of Gurk is the small town of Strasbourg, whose fortress once ruled the Prince Bishops of Gurk.

History

The name of Gurk (the " gurgling " ) derives from the eponymous river Gurk. Today's municipal area was already inhabited around 2000 years ago, but did not arrive until after the annexation of Carinthia on Bayern importance. The earliest documented mention of the river comes from the year 831, a Salzburg, found at yard Gurk was called 864. 898, Emperor Arnulf the Hemma ancestors Zwentibold large parts of the Gurktals, including a farmyard Gurk, its location shall be presumed in today Lieding (municipality Strasbourg).

Population

According to 2001 census Gurk has 1,311 inhabitants, of which 99.0 % have Austrian citizenship. 94.6 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 1.5% for the Protestant Church, 3.5% have no religious affiliation.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Gurk shows " in blue an elongated Romanesque basilica with two baroque towers the helmeted; the nave is surmounted by a Biedermeier scale ".
