Gus Arriola

Gustavo Gus Arriola ( born July 17, 1917 in Florence, Arizona, † February 2nd 2008 in Carmel -by-the -Sea, California ) was an American comic book artist. He gained particular notoriety through his comic strip Gordo.

Life and work

Arriola was born as the youngest of nine children of a Mexican immigrant. His mother died early and his family moved with him to Los Angeles when Arriola was eight years old. There he attended the Manual Arts High School, and after their graduation in 1935, he found employment in the studio of Charles Mintz. In 1937, Arriola moved to Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, where he worked in the Animation Department. Based on cartoon characters, which he developed in 1940, created the daily strip Gordo Arriola, whose first episode was released on 24 November 1941. The comic is a Mexican farmer was interrupted by the convening Arriolas in October 1942, but was continued in May 1943, at least as Sunday page. In 1943 he also married Mary Frances Sevier that he had met at Metro -Goldwyn- Mayer. In the army worked in a unit that created training films. After discharge from the army Arriolas in 1946 he sat Gordo again as a daily strip on. The Strip, which was published of his most successful times of 270 newspapers, was continued by Arriola until March, 1985, and set.

After living in La Jolla, California, and Phoenix, Arizona, to Arriola settled in Carmel -by-the -Sea in 1956. He died after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and cancer. With his wife he had a son who died in a car accident at the age of 35 years died.
