Gus Johnson (basketball)

Gus Johnson ( born December 13, 1938 in Akron, Ohio, † April 29, 1987 ) was an American professional basketball player.

In NBA Draft 1963 Johnson was selected 10th place by the Baltimore Bullets. For his achievements in the first game year he was appointed to the NBA All- Rookie Team. In Baltimore, he spent the first nine years of his NBA career. During this time he was a five-time NBA All-Star and was four times appointed to the All- NBA Second Team twice and the NBA All-Defensive team, but a title to me was the Bullets denied him. After injury problems he was transferred in 1972 to the Phoenix Suns, but he made only 21 games. In the same year, he joined the ABA team the Indiana Pacers with whom he won the ABA title in 1973.

In his career he reached, he scored an average of 17.1 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. Johnson is regarded as one of the first players with a more common today spectacular play. So were slam dunks, broken cage washers and wide passes behind his back to his repertoire.

Johnson died on April 29, 1987 at Akron City Hospital with a brain tumor. He was 48 years old.

In December 1986, the jersey number 25 has been excluded from the Baltimore Bullets of the new award in honor of Gus Johnson. In 2010, Johnson was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial added Basketball Hall of Fame.
