Gustaf Cederström

Gustaf Cederström ( born April 12, 1845 in Stockholm; † August 20, 1933 ) was a Swedish historical painter.

Life

Cederström underwent initially a military career as a second lieutenant in a military police unit in Värmland, but after he had completed drawing lessons with Ferdinand Julius Fagerlin in Dusseldorf and Léon Bonnat in Paris, he submitted his resignation.

A great sensation was aroused in 1878 his painting journey home of Charles XII. Corpse, which was shown at the World Exhibition in Paris. Buyer was the Russian Grand Duke Constantine, but after an extensive fundraising campaign it was later in the possession of the Swedish National Museum about where initially only one copy was shown. Cederström was deeply involved in the competition for the design of the staircase hall of the Stockholm National Museum and was awarded a first prize for his work Ansgarius preaches the Christian doctrine, the final order for the frescoes on the other hand was Carl Larsson.

In addition to historical works Cederström created portraits and soldiers trials.

He was from 1878 a member of the Swedish Academy of Arts, from 1887 professor and from 1899 director of the educational institution of the Academy. Cederström led the Swedish department at the art exhibitions of 1888 in Copenhagen, 1896 in Berlin and 1901 in Munich.
