Gustaf Wilhelm Palm

Gustaf Wilhelm Palm ( born March 14, 1810 Good Herrlöf in Kristianstad, † September 20, 1890 ) was a Swedish painter.

Biography

Palm 1828 students of the Academy in Stockholm, and began to exhibit in 1831 smaller landscapes. In 1833, he led a study tour of Norway and in 1837 he published two books with lithographs by nature templates. In order to cure himself from her eye disease, he traveled to Berlin in 1837 and due to financial support from home, he continued his journey through Hungary, Vienna and Venice to Rome, where he arrived in 1840. There Palm quickly gained prestige after which he was able to sell several works to Russia, England and America.

From 1847 he took advantage of a more than two-year scholarship for studies at the Roman College. During the riots of 1848, Palm was like almost all artists of Rome enrolled in the Citizens' Council, but according to his own statements, he never took part in battles. After a long visit to Sicily he went to Spain in 1851 and then in 1852 Paris back to Stockholm. In Stockholm he became a member of the Academy of Arts and teacher of the art of drawing, which he remained until 1878. 1881 was the one vice professor.

Palms daughter Anna Sofia ( * 1859 ) was followed in the footsteps of his father and published a large number of watercolors.

Palms interaction

Palms preference were Italian landscapes, and so he received from his colleagues nicknamed "Palma Vecchio ". He worked with great care and its flowers and trees were presented with scientific precision. In the Swedish National Museum view his works at Vivita Castellana (1846), Grand Canal can be seen in Venice ( 1860) and Ariccia in the afternoon sun (1864 ). The custom built after his return images of Swedish cities were less well received. A collection of tree studies were published as lithographs.
