Gustav Muheim

Gustav MUHEIM ( born September 11, 1851 in Altdorf, † April 4, 1917 ibid, hometown entitled in Altdorf ) was a Swiss politician ( KVP ).

Biography

Gustav MUHEIM came from a wealthy family and attended the primary and district school in Altdorf, and then high school in Altdorf and in Fribourg. From 1869 to 1873 he studied philosophy and law at the universities of Würzburg, Heidelberg and Zurich. In 1891 he became an honorary member of the Swiss student association. He was the founder, co-owner and editor of the weekly paper Uri.

From 1874 to 1882 Gustav MUHEIM received his first political mandate, namely as a district of the canton of Uri. Only one year after the commencement of this office he was mayor of Altdorf and remained so until the year 1870. In 1877 he was elected to the Senate, where he served as Senate President in 1891 and until 1901 retired from this office. In between, he was from 1882 to 1903 Governing Council and was there first before the Justice and Military Department, then the Department of Justice and Police and finally the Department of Finance. In the years 1884-1888, 1892-1896 and 1898-1902 he was Chief Magistrate. Uri's population chose MUHEIM in 1905 in the National Council, where he had a seat until 1911.

In 1891 he was traded as a candidate for the Federal Council and would have been well accepted by the Liberals. MUHEIM waived but for family reasons on a possible candidacy. In the United Federal Assembly, he chaired from 1892 to 1895 the Catholic- conservative faction and led the conference in Lucerne, from which in August 1894 gave rise to the Catholic People's Party. This new party he chaired from 1894 to 1895.

At national level, Gustav MUHEIM sat for the Federal support of the antiquity collections, the establishment of the National Museum and the National Library, as well as for the Federal Polytechnic in Zurich (ETH ) a. Cantonal he was responsible for many of the laws. He was decisive role in the Urner constitutional revision of 1888. As President of the Constituent Assembly, he prepared the draft and broke the rural community to accept the changes. In the implementation, he played a leading role. In his time as Finance Director, he was always ready for a balanced budget. MUHEIM campaigned for the restoration of the monuments of Uri, the founding of the Association for History and Antiquities of Uri, the establishment of the cantonal college in Altdorf and the establishment of an educational institution for poor and neglected children. His greatest principle has always been the rule of law.

Next possessed Gustav MUHEIM also several board memberships. Thus, in the Gotthard Railway, at the shipping company of Lake Lucerne and the Ersparniskasse Uri.

In the Swiss army, he was promoted to Major in 1887.
