Gustave de Smet

Gustave de Smet ( born January 21, 1877 in Ghent, † October 8, 1943 in Deurle, East Flanders ) was a Belgian painter of impressionism and expressionism.

By 1898, de Smet studied at the Academy of Ghent. His early work was influenced by impressionism. From 1908 he worked in Sint -Martens- Latem. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, he fled to the Netherlands. There he came into contact with Expressionist what his style changed radically. The works of this period were gloomy, but also marked by restlessness and dynamics. In 1922 he returned to Belgium, where he then lived first in Afsnee in Deurle. The pictures of this period, who most people in motifs, lay off the depressive mood, but be serious. Increasingly also appeared landscapes and urban scenes, the picture structure adopted gentler forms. Written in his later career almost realistic paintings.
