Gutenfels

The Good Rock Castle is a castle on a spur 200 meters above sea level. NN high rocky outcrop 110 meters above the town of Kaub in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley Rhineland- Palatinate. It is a rare well-preserved example of the Hohenstaufen castle building.

History

The Good rock castle was perhaps built as a castle Kaub (Cube ) from 1220 on behalf of the Empire. Already in 1252 it was unsuccessfully besieged by William of Holland. 1277 transferred the Lords of Falkenstein castle and town of Kaub the Palatine fief. Until 1289 they sold their possessions in and around Kaub with the castle to Count Palatine Ludwig.

In the 14th century the city wall was built and the home side provided with a kennel. At the same time, the plateau of the western bailey was built.
