Guy of Ibelin, constable of Cyprus

Guy of Ibelin (franz: Guy d' Ibelin, † after May 1255 ) out of the house Ibelin was Marshal, later Constable of the Kingdom of Cyprus.

He was a younger son of John of Ibelin, the " old man of Beirut ", and Melisende of Arsuf. His father was a powerful baron of the kingdom of Jerusalem and since 1227 Regent of Cyprus. 1228 John was deposed by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, who claimed dominion over Cyprus itself. Johann then led the armed resistance ( Lombard war ) against the claims to power of the emperor in Outremer.

At a young age Guido fought on 15 June 1232 the victorious Battle of Agridi against the troops of the imperial governor Richard Filangieri, in an invasion of Cyprus could be prevented. Later, at the latest in 1248, he was appointed by King Henry I to the Marshal of Cyprus.

Together with his brother, seneschal Baldwin of Ibelin, Guido led the Cypriot knighthood from 1249 on the crusade of Louis IX. from France to Egypt ( Sixth Crusade ). There, however, both came in April 1250 in the captivity of the Mamluks. In the time of their captivity, the Mamluks in Egypt perpetrated on May 1, 1250 a coup and murdered Sultan Turan Shah. The Mamluk left the captives free a few days later for a ransom.

After Guido had returned to Cyprus, he was in 1250 by the King to the Constable ( Constable ) appointed.
