Gypsy is the title of a musical that was first performed on Broadway in 1959. The lyrics wrote Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne, the music, the book Arthur Laurents, according to the autobiography of Gypsy: A Memoir by Gypsy Rose Lee. The show was produced by David Merrick and Leland Hayward, Jerome Robbins obliged for directing and choreography. Originally Sondheim would have to write the music, but the opposition of the leading actress Ethel Merman failed, which wanted a more experienced composer. The musical was very successful and was filmed in 1962 starring Natalie Wood as Gypsy, see Gypsy ( film).

The plot is based on the life of burlesque dancer and stripper Gypsy Rose Lee (Rose Louise Hovick, 1914-1970 ), but focused, to the Broadway star Ethel Merman to provide a suitable role for her mother and their relationship to fame and show business. The scene begins in the 1920s: trying to make her daughters June and Louise in various vaudeville shows to Stars Rose. As June, the more promising of the two girls, freed after years from the tutelage of the mother and her own way goes to Rose focuses more on Louise. However, since the time of Vaudeville is over, they end up in a rundown Burlesquetheater where Louise finally begins her career as a stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. With a debate between mother and daughter, in the Rose admits to have used their daughters to feel like a star by itself, ending the musical.

The role of Mama Rose is considered as a challenge for Broadway singers, both vocally and theatrically. The song repertoire includes classics such as " Everything's Coming Up Roses ", " Together, Where Ever We Go " and "Small World" and other minor hits such as " Mr. Goldstone " or " You Gotta Get A Gimmick ".

Gypsy was first performed in 1979 in the German language in the Municipal Theater of Münster, in a version by Frank Thannhäuser and Iris Schumacher. In the 1990s, Tyne Daly had great success in the revival of the play at New York's Broadway. Was first filmed in 1962 with the musical Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden. A television adaptation, there were 1993 with Bette Midler, Cynthia Gibb and Peter Riegert.
