Jule Styne

Julius Kerwin Styne ( born December 31, 1905 as Julius Kerwin Stein in London, † September 20, 1994 in New York City ) was an American composer.

Life

Jule Styne was born the son of a Jewish immigrant family from the Ukraine, which, after a lengthy stopover in Britain, in 1912 reached the United States. As a musically gifted child, he took piano lessons and played with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis. Well due to small hands and a violation of the right index finger he turned as a teen entertainment music, played in jazz bands and composed songs.

From the mid- 1930s, he worked as a songwriter and voice teacher in Hollywood. There he joined a closer collaboration with Frank Loesser and Sammy Cahn. With Cahn worked together on some movie musicals, among others with Frank Sinatra. He published almost 1500 songs - for Three Coins in the Fountain from the film, he received an Oscar in 1955.

The mid-1940s he began to work on Broadway. Among the best known musicals, which he composed include Gypsy, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Funny Girl. Its up today probably best known composition is the song People from Funny Girl, which made Barbra Streisand famous.
