Stanley Donen

Stanley Donen ( born April 13, 1924 in Columbia, South Carolina ) is an American film director and choreographer.

Life

Donen started as a child with dance classes and got already the age of seventeen to Broadway. He made his Broadway debut in 1941 in the musical Pal Joey by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.

After the Second World War, the film producer Arthur Freed and choreographer Gene Kelly brought him to Hollywood to make a film of the musical On the Town by Leonard Bernstein. Thus began his career as the most important musical director of MGM in the 1950s, in which he directed, among others, the classic MGM musicals, Singin 'in the Rain (1952 ). However Donen never won an Oscar for his work. Only in 1998 he was awarded the Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. In 2004 he received the honorary Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
