Haibane Renmei (Japanese灰 羽 连 盟, literally " Aschflügelbund ") is a 13 - episode anime television series from 2002 is based on a dōjinshi by Yoshitoshi ABe, Old Home no Haibane - tachi (オールド ホーム の 灰 羽 たち., no Haibane - tachi Ōrudo Homu, dt " the Aschflügel of Old Home "). The dōjinshi series was discontinued after it was clear that an anime should be produced, since Abe wanted to fully concentrate on the latter.

Title

The series title comes from the title of a Artbooks, drew the ABe in 1998. This artbook was called Charcoal Feather Federation, and devoted himself for the first time the topic of angel -like beings ( Haibane ) who live among the people.

Handlungsort

The story takes place in a small world, which is surrounded by a large wall. None other than the " dealers " ( toga ), with which no one is allowed to talk, it is allowed to cross the wall yet to see what lies behind. Within this wall there is a town called Glienicke and their residents and out of town in the Old Home in a factory and live the so-called Haibane.

Haibane are not born in the usual way, they hatch from a cocoon somewhere grows through a seed in the Old Home or in the factory and is filled with a breathable liquid. When they wake up they are of different ages, but mainly still children or not yet grown up. They look and feel just like people, but have small, gray-white wings on the back, which usually grow them shortly after waking in pain. They also have a halo ( the halo ) above the head. The organization Graywing Federation ( Haibane Renmei ) takes care of the whole, the interests of the Graugeflügelten.

The Haibane have to take on tasks and work, for example in the city without pay, but may not purchase with a notebook and a signature used items, for which the people have no more use. The Haibane have a lot of freedom, even though they can not work everywhere, but some of the limitations that they must not exceed. So it is forbidden them, among other things, to approach the wall or with words to talk with the gray wing collar to hold money or even to get new things.

Because they usually can only remember the dream in its cocoon, do not know the Haibane, where they come from. However, many believe that they are reincarnations from another life and that they have appeared for a reason as Haibane again. This dream is also the one who gives them their name. If a Haibane looks, her time, she goes to the West Forest, to ascend there and disappear. Approaching this day of departure, the halo fades occasionally. Even just this remains when the Haibane 's gone. However, in rare cases, a Haibane has no time because she sees herself tied to their sins. If it remains too long a sin bound Haibane, they lose their wings and halo and must henceforth separated from the people and the other Haibane live.

Action

The story revolves around the everyday life of the Haibane, where Rakka (落下, dt traps) is the focus. She is born in Old Home and discovered by the older Haibane Reki (砾, dt stone for throwing ). Rakka dreams in their cocoon from falling through clouds and air, but may no longer after birth clearly remember the dream. It is introduced by the other Haibane at Old Home in life as one of these creatures and get to know the surroundings. For Kuu (空, German air), a young Haibane comes their time. She goes to the West Forest and has their day of departure. Rakka suffers Kuus disappearance and their wings get black spots, which means that it is tied to a sin. In a well in the West Forest asks the essence, which they did to suffering, forgiveness, making it healed.

Rakka finds out then that Reki, to which they had a close relationship, has long been tied to a sin. However Reki hides this by bleaching their wings. But she did not have much time to get their sin to be aware of. With the help of Rakka and other Haibane she succeeds but to remember her dream to become aware of sin and shake it off.

Background

The audience learns not exactly what the Haibane are, nor where they come from or where they are going and why they existed. Yoshitoshi Abe wants to make his own thoughts on the series and therefore has not approved or disapproved of the possible interpretations.

One possible interpretation is that the children were Haibane who have committed suicide or are divorced too soon from life. In this context could be inferred from the various names derive their death:

  • Rakka in death plunged / fallen,
  • Hyoko: in the ice lake drowned / drowned,
  • Nemu: / died in his sleep by sleeping pills, etc.

According to this interpretation, they would pay in the walled world for their sins in their previous life or make up for their lost time.

In an interview, Abe said he was inspired by the novels Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and Mister Wind-Up Bird by Murakami Haruki to the story. The election of the characters he had left to his feeling of being in a marginal note of the Artbooks he had noted that he had in everyday clothes simply want to draw angels.

In addition, is alluded to in several places on Christian ideas of angels and the world. Thus, the halos like donuts are made in a baking tin and be found in the fifth series of one of the Haibane a creation story that is similar to the biblical.
