Halkirk

Halkirk (Gaelic Hacraig ) is a village in the Scottish Highland Unitary Authority and the traditional county of Caithness. It is located 10 km south of Thurso and 24 km north-west of Wick on the river Thurso. In 2001 Halkirk recorded 923 inhabitants.

In the early 13th century Halkirk was the successor of Scrabster seat of the Bishops of Caithness. After a short time the seat was, however, moved further south to Dornoch.

With Gerston and Ben Morven two whiskey distilleries were in Halkirk. The former was closed in 1882, temptation 1911.

Traffic

The A9, which connects Edinburgh with Thurso runs, about 2.5 km east of Halkirk, and includes the village on to the long distance network. In addition, the city is with a Georgemas Junction railway station 2.5 km east available. This is served by the Far North Line.
