Halldór Ásgrímsson

Halldór Ásgrímsson ( born September 8, 1947) is an Icelandic politician. From 1994 to 2006 he was chairman of the Progress Party ( Framsóknarflokkur ) and 2004-2006 Prime Minister of Iceland.

Life

He belongs since 1974 to the Icelandic parliament Althingi. His ministerial posts among the Office of the Minister for Fisheries (1983-1991), the Office of the Minister for Justice and Minister for Church Affairs (1988-1989), the Office of the Minister for Nordic Cooperation (1985-1987 and 1995-1999) and ultimately the office of Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 2004.

On 15 September 2004, he took over his new post as the 15th Prime Minister since independence (17 June 1944) by his predecessor Davíð Oddsson.

Caused a stir Halldór Ásgrímsson with a public statement in February 2006 that Iceland will probably be a member of the European Union ( EU) by 2015. Whether Iceland will also introduce the Euro, however, depended on the future attitude of Great Britain, Sweden and Denmark against the single currency. On June 5, 2006 Halldór Ásgrímsson announced his resignation both as party leader and prime minister. The reason the poor performance of his party was called at the nationwide local elections in May 2006. On 15 June 2006 he handed over his duties as prime minister Geir Hilmar Haarde to the Independence Party and was founded in 2007 as the successor of Per Unckel Secretary General of the Nordic Council, a member of the Nordic Council.
