Handsfree

A speakerphone, handsfree car kit or FSE is a combination of fixed in one device (eg mobile phone) or vehicle installed speakers and microphone. The name derives from the fact that neither speaker nor microphone must be conducted to the ear or mouth, so your hands are free. Therefore, the term is incorrectly used for so-called headsets.

In contrast to radios that utilize FSE only in duplex mode (half duplex ), resulting in telephone conversations ( in full duplex) on FSE feedback. Through feedback suppressor but can be acquitted without the foreclosure of the listener 's ear and without speech button. In more complex FSE ambient noise can be suppressed by the analysis of signals from several microphones. This course is guaranteed even in noisy environments and the use of voice recognition to control devices (such as voice dial ) enables reliable.

Legal requirements

Germany

Since early 2001, 23 para 1a Highway Code (D) are in Germany when making calls hands-free car in passenger cars pursuant to § absolutely necessary as long as the engine of the vehicle is running and this does not stand still; the requirement applies to all drivers, including bicyclists.

Austria

Since 1 July 1999, the use of a hands-free phone while driving is required for the driver in Austria. The relevant provisions are found in § 102 para 3 sets of 5 to 7 of the motor vehicle Act ( CFG ). Moreover prohibits § 58 para 1 of the Austrian traffic regulations implicitly steering a vehicle when the driver is distracted from the traffic.

Investigations

In September 2004, in a study by the Swedish National Research Institute of Roads and Transport (VTI ) demonstrated that these devices do not improve road safety because the attention will already distracted by telephoning itself.

In 2005, again, several studies have shown that hands-free devices does not reduce the risk of accidents caused by telephoning. An Australian study even concluded that hands-free devices to more frequent motorists and seduce longer phone calls while driving and therefore even increase the risk of accidents.

In addition to the road traffic law also gives you some specifications of the motor-vehicle manufacturers. In motor vehicles ( produced in 1995 ) is the commissioning of a transceiver system (operating radio, bad radio, amateur radio, citizens' band radio, cellular / mobile phone / car phone ) only permitted if an assembled according to the manufacturer's guidelines external antenna is available, otherwise by influencing the vehicle electronics, the general operating permit ( ABE ) go out.

Technology

A distinction is made between " plug and play" with hands-free devices - and fixed mounting solutions. In contrast to built-in hands-free " plug and play" systems to be plugged into the cigarette lighter of the vehicle and then connected to the mobile phone. Microphone and speakers are often integrated in the device.

In both cases the operation is either via the mobile phone itself, through the car kit, or - in the case of fixed-mounted solution - possible via steering wheel buttons.

Another difference is the connection to the mobile phone: A distinction holder and stay- bound solutions. In the first case, the mobile phone is inserted into a holder which is different for each type.

The current trend is towards stay- solutions. Here, the mobile phone usually communicates using the car kit via Bluetooth. The mobile phone can be located anywhere in the vehicle, such as in the coat pocket or even in the trunk. This eliminates the hassle of cables; however, no automatic recharge the mobile phone battery is possible. More and more and more important here, the SIM Access Profile (SAP), also known as rSAP which is opposite to the Hands -free profile offers significant advantages, such as the use of external antenna of the vehicle. New developments are even allow to output MP3 files of the mobile phone or navigation instructions there an installed navigation software via the vehicle speakers.
