He is a professor at the Institute of Meteorology of the University of Hamburg and director of the " Institute for Coastal Research " at the Helmholtz -Zentrum Geesthacht - Centre for Materials and Coastal Research in Geesthacht. For meteorology there by Hans von Storch about 50 publications. Hans von Storch is taken from the wealthy former district of Bad Doberan noble family of the von Storch.

Academic Career

Von Storch studied mathematics, physics and Danish at the University of Hamburg. In 1976 he received his diploma in mathematics, in 1979 followed by a PhD in meteorology with the thesis "Numerical filter for attenuating noise in hemispheric meteorological models ". In 1985 he was habilitated. From 1980 to 1985 he worked at the Institute of Meteorology of the University of Hamburg, and between 1986 and 1995 head of the group "Statistical Analysis and Modelling" at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. Position on global warming

Stork doubted the sustainability of its opinion to alarmist position on climate change. Scientists and scientific institutions should create knowledge. If they instead with simplified and simplistic expressions - similar interest groups - sought to impose an agenda on behalf of the good, they would jeopardize the long-term success of their work. Who denote as coal power plants as factories of death, risking climate change a similar loss of credibility, as this took place after 1990, the so-called forest dieback. Overselling leads to impossible targets in politics, try reducing the public's attention and risking loss of credibility of scientists because of exaggerated or not true predictions. Similar to Roger A. Pielke Sr. and Roger A. Pielke Jr. emphasizes the importance of von Storch regional risk assessments to global approaches.

In connection with the hacking incident on climate research center of the University of East Anglia, he criticized, among others, the blog RealClimate as a " mouthpiece of the cartel that the hockey stick graph represents " and " modern central organ ". He maintains a blog called " The Climate onion ". Several times he got scientifically and in public with the leading IPCC author and government advisor Stefan Rahmstorf another, whom he accused of, among others, scare tactics and activism. Rahmstorf throws von Storch in return a " statistical [n ] fallacy " in reference to the " warming pause " represented by him, by merely the period since 1998 Note 1998 with " extreme [ n] outliers" performing. In addition, do not work by Stork with " scientific arguments " but with "ad hominem attacks ".

Stork in favor of a technological decarbonisation, rather than in the nominal climate targets or emission trading technologies should be promoted that emit less CO2.

In January 2011, was called by Stork in FOCUS as a " climate realist " number 81 of the 100 most influential Germans.

Stork imputed 2009, the current climate research scientists and one of the idea of political consulting dominated by climate scientists discourse. It is also foreseen, as the climate issue will no longer be taken seriously as such, but will instrumentalized for a ubiquitous regulatory almost all areas of life.

Hans von Storch established 2011 at a lecture on his eightieth birthday of Klaus Hasselmann with respect to its cooperation with Nico Stehr found this 've noticed as social scientists much earlier that the climatology is being held in a Determinismusfalle: " The integration of science in a social context becomes a prison when the usefulness of the scientific results of a policy comes to the fore, the fear of a supposed abuse leads by political enemies of the spring. Then some thoughts inopportune and a priori implausible, but other opportune and a priori plausible. [ ... ] The democratic system has only to carry out yet, and if it does not, then people are stupid. "

That Hans von Storch wrote along with the ethnologist Werner Krauss: On February 25, 2013, the book " The dangerous proximity of policy and climate research, the climate trap " appeared. The book has been discussed by several newspapers, including from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Badische Zeitung. Ulf von Rauchhaupt explains in his review for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the book is " not edifying reading for ' climate skeptics ' " was. For the Badische Zeitung Andreas Frey writes about the book:

"One of the main grievances of the two is: Many climate scientists were too alarmist. You would only lead us to the horrors of global warming in mind, disaster scenarios, drawing, summon the apocalypse, exaggerate and dramatize. ' The communication strategy of the past two decades was, in essence, to describe the possible dramatic consequences of man-made climate change ', says Hans von Storch. "

Von Storch was from 1976 to 1985 editor of the magazine "Der Hamburger Donaldist " and 1977 co-founder of DONALD ( German organization non-commercial supporters of fair Donaldismus ), which deals with the exploration of the ( fictional) life in Duckburg.
