Haran

Haran (Hebrew: הרן ) is according to the Bible, the name of a younger brother of Abraham, the ancestor of Israel. He is first mentioned in Genesis 11:26 EU in the genealogy of the descendants of Noah. His father's name was Terah therefore, his second older brother was Nahor. Haran was in turn the father of Lot, the nephew of Abraham, who went with this to Canaan and there in the demise of Sodom and Gomorrah almost lost his life (Gen 19 EU ), and of Milcah, and Iscah (Genesis 11,29 EU).

Haran itself but remained in his native city of Ur of the Chaldees ( Mesopotamia ). He should be there early, even before his father died. After his death, his father moved with his surviving sons and their families in another city, which is also reproduced in some translations as Haran. After 11.31 EU gene it was probably between Mesopotamia and Canaan, now Palestine, or is identical to the nearby city of Harran in Turkey today, as the hometown of Haran Chaldean Ur (Gen 11,28 EU) and the Jebusite city of Salem (Gen 14,18 EU) along the green crescent centers of worship of the moon god ( Nanna, Sin, Tzedek ) were. Salem in the story of Abraham and Melchizedek (Gen. 14.1 to 24 EU ) is interpreted usually as Jerusalem, where the priest Melchizedek came, the family of Abraham paid tithes (Gen 14,20 EU). In the city of Haran, Terah said to have died at the age of 205 years (Gen 11,32 EU ) before God Haran Abram 's brother Haran (or Harran Charan or ) sent to Canaan (Gen 12:1-9 EU).

Name similarity

The striking similarity in name of the youngest son, who died young, died with the unknown city where Abraham's father has given to speculations: Maybe Haran was the eldest son in truth, after whom the town was named; then the father would want his legacy handed over to the younger sons. But Abraham is supposed to be broken at the behest of God after the death of his father in an unknown land (Gen. 12:1-3 EU); he would then leave his inheritance, an eldest son actually not entitled to inherit state.

However, the name of the youngest son of Terah, and the city, both of which are equally represented in many English and almost all German translations of the Bible with Haran, is written differently in the original Hebrew:

  • הרן " Haran " for the person,
  • חרן " Charan " of the place.

That is, for example, the set of gene 11,31 EU in the original Hebrew:

קח תרח את - אברם בנו ואת - לוט בן - הרן בן - בנו ואת שרי כלתו אשת אברם בנו ויצאו אתם מאור כשדים ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו עד - חרן וישבו שם

The Hebrew original even if the person's name and the city in many translations are reproduced as the same, as refuted by the different notation, the aforementioned equating the two terms and is the purely speculative character, which is caused by the more common inaccurate translations. This is also evident by various spellings of translations in other languages , as also in the Septuagint and the Vulgate.

This will also increase linguistically uninformed reader can get an idea itself, 11,31 OT are highlighted the key words in bold in the following examples of gene translation:
