Haría (municipality)

Haria is one of the seven churches of the Canary Island of Lanzarote with its eponymous capital. The main town of Haria is located in the valley of the 1000 palms. The legend says that whenever in Haria a girl was born, a new palm grew.

History

Like other places in Lanzarote, Haria was frequently exposed to invasions and pirate attacks. Probably the most devastating occurred in 1586, when almost all of the palm trees was burnt down. The classical buildings at the Plaza de la Constitución date from the 19th century, when Haria was temporary seat of a Constituent Assembly. Since the 1950s the city suffered from depopulation. In the Franco era many people were leaving Haria towards South America. To date, some of the then abandoned houses are empty.

Townscape

Center of the village Haria is the elongated, shady Plaza León y Castillo, with its laurel and eucalyptus trees. At the eastern end of the square is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, which was founded in 1956 after severe storm damage rebuilt. She is now a contemporary-styled parish church. Near the Plaza de la Constitucion is the craft center Taller Municipal de Artesania. Here embroideries, baskets and capes are made according to ancient tradition.

To the holy day of San Juan ( June 24 to 27 ) are around for lack of flowers and leaves in place by the locals colorful salt carpets with different designs placed on the streets. This is done during the day and you can watch the people at work. Only the next day destroyed a procession with the Holy Juan this salt pictures.

In the cemetery of Haria is the grave of the great artist and conservationist of the island, César Manrique, who moved there in 1988 in a reconstructed farmhouse from him, and on 25 September 1992 was due to a car accident at the age of 73 years died.
