Harmanli

Charmanli [ xarmɐnli ] ( Bulgarian Харманли ) is a town in southern Bulgaria, in the Oblast Haskovo, 33 km east of the town of Haskovo. Charmanli after Haskovo and Dimitrovgrad the third largest city in the oblast Haskovo. Charmanli is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality Charmanli.

Geography

The city lies at the confluence of the rivers Charmanli River and Mariza. The street Istanbul - Sofia, which is an important transcontinental transit route runs through the city.

Religion

In the town there is a small Muslim minority. The Roma in the city are Christian with roughly the same or Muslim. In the city there are two large churches - Sveti Atanasij ( Bulg Свети Атанасий, built in 1835 ) and Sveti Ivan Rilski ( Bulg Свети Иван Рилски; person to see: Ivan Rilski ).

Economy

The main economic activities of the region are agriculture, furniture production, meat processing and edible oil production. In the city there are two wineries that produce wine of high quality.

Attractions

In the city there is a caravanserai, which was a resting place for travelers to Istanbul. Today, only one wall of which is still preserved, which bears an inscription, which testifies to the 500-year history of the city.

Viewpoint

On the road from Haskovo to Charmanli, shortly before Haskovo, the road makes a bend above the western half of the city. The road runs there a little down the slope - between the hills to the south and southwest hides itself in the valley and to the north and east is the view along the valley of the Maritsa free. Shortly after entering the city, cross the Charmanli River, which crosses at its headwaters a scenic gorge.

Garbawibrücke

The former Garbawibrücke ( Bulg Гърбав мост ), now located behind the building of the District Court and the museum has previously connected the two sides of the Charmanli River. This paved stone bridge, with a Turkish inscription, was a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture. Due to a diversion of the river bed today no water flows more under the bridge. Originally the site of a lake with rowing boats was planned in this river diversion, about which there should cause the bridge.

Mountaintop Trifon

The summit Trifon ( after Saint Tryphon ), near the village of Karnak Ostar ( Bulg Остър камък to German: Pointed Stone ) is a beautiful viewpoint. Beside it stood a dolmen, which was painted in 2007 by unknown assailants with brown color. Every year on February 1, the Trifon Day ( the patron saint of winegrowers ) a big festival is held on the mountain.

Belonoga source

If you leave Charmanli in an easterly direction, you arrive at the source of the Belonoga. The source was developed as a drinking fountain with a stone tablet with the same poem ( The source of Belonoga - Bulg " Изворът на Белоногата ", 1873, a well-known poem in Bulgaria) by Petko Slaveikov ( bulg.Петко Славейков, 1827-1895 ) and a statue.
