Elhovo

Elchowo [ ɛɫxovo ] (also written Elhovo, Bulgarian Елхово ) is a city in southeastern Bulgaria, in the Oblast Yambol. With 10,770 inhabitants (as of March 2012) is Elchowo is by Yambol, the second largest city of the province and the administrative center of the homonymous municipality.

Geography

The city lies on the left bank of the Elchowo Tundscha, in the southeastern part of the Thracian lowlands between the beach damage and Sakar. Up to Yambol town is 28 km away and as far as Topolowgrad 27 km.

History

Already in Thracian times was a settlement here under the name Orudiza. The Romans called the place Orudiza ad Burgum, the Slavs then Joaniza and Janiza. During Ottoman rule, the city bore the name Janidschal, Enidsche Kasalagatsch and Kasalagatsch (or Kasal Agach; Bulg Къзъл Агач ). The name Elchowo dates back to the time before the liberation from the Turks ( 1878). According to tradition, a well-known Heiducke escaped his pursuers in the Turkish city by itself in an alder ( Bulg елха; Elcha ) hidden - hence the name Elchowo.

In the city the American Peace Corps is responsible to conduct international programs.

Policy

Mayor since 2007

2007 Petar Kirov entered as a candidate of Action Committee (GERB, Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria, Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union - People's Union and the Union of Democratic Forces ) for mayor, and could be in a runoff election on November 4 against Dimitar Dimitrov, candidate of the ex- Communists (BSP ) with 61.02 percent of the vote ( 5430 voters ) prevail.

In the local elections in 2011 Petar Kirov was re-elected as mayor again in a runoff election. The politician was able to win with 59.16 percent of the votes, the elections in the second round for themselves. The runner-up Tatiana Djulgerowa, candidate of the BSP, convinced only 3550, or 40.84 percent of the voters.

Economy

Near the city the brazier of Elchowo, the large deposits of shale coal ( lignite ) is having. The city has mainly dairy industry, which produces dairy products such as siren. The clothing industry is represented in the city.
