Harry Johnston

Sir Henry Hamilton Johnston, GCMG, KCB ( Sir Harry Johnston, born June 12, 1858 in London, † July 31, 1927 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire ) was an English explorer of Africa.

Life

Johnston studied zoology and foreign languages. Later he started a character study, during which he spent two years in France, and went in 1876 from wanderlust to Portugal and Spain.

In 1882 he joined the Earl of Mayo, who wanted to explore West Africa. We went up to Mossamedes, Humpata and the Kunene River. The group traveled to the Congo from its mouth right up to Stanley Pool and Bdldbd. In 1884 he undertook on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society in London is the scientific study of the fauna and flora of Mount Kilimanjaro in East Africa. Here he ascended the Kibo up to 5,090 meters altitude.

1885 Johnston Vice Consul in Cameroon, later also in the so-called oil flow District, which was renamed in 1891 in Oil Rivers Protectorate. 1889 was sent in the same position to Mozambique. Here he examined the Leopoldsee (or Rikwa ). 1891-94 he served as Commissioner for British Central Africa and ensured the safety of the routes at the Nyasa.

In 1897 he was appointed British Consul General of Tunis in 1899 to the British Commissioner and Consul General of the new Protectorate of Uganda. In 1900 he ascended the Ruwenzori up to 4,500 meters. In the spring of 1902 he retired from the diplomatic service. A short stopover in Liberia, where he devoted himself to economic and political progress, completed his time in Africa.

His subsequent political ambitions in England, he was not able to because he was defeated in two elections (1904 and 1906), his rival candidates.

Henry Hamilton Johnston died on 31 July 1927.

During his stay in the Congo area Johnston has discovered the okapi in 1900, among others, and named.
