Harvey Schmidt

Harvey Lester Schmidt ( born September 12, 1929 in Dallas, Texas) is an American composer. He is mainly known for its many musicals, including the musical, which was played longest row: The Fantasticks ( 1960-2002 ).

Life

Schmidt began an arts degree at the University of Texas at Austin, where he met the Musical -author Tom Jones ( b. 1928 ). For this Schmidt began to follow acting students on the piano. A short time later, the two began writing musicals. The first published piece was a revue. After his service in the army Schmidt moved to New York City to work as an illustrator for NBC. Later he worked as an illustrator for the magazines, among others, Life, Sports Illustrated and Fortune.

Schmidt wrote all his major musicals with writer Tom Jones. His most important work is the 1960-2002 total of 17,162 times Off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks listed. Schmidt worked in 1995 on the film adaptation of this work under the same title with. In 1992 Schmidt of The Fantasticks a Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre Award.

The next successful musical of the teams Schmidt / Jones were 1963 110 in the Shade (330 performances, nominated for the Tony Award for composer and lyricist ) and I Do! I Do! (1966, 560 Broadway performances, German: ... till death do us part ).

A CD entitled Harvey Schmidt plays Jones and Schmidt was published in 2005.
