Haug is a German family name.

Origin and Meaning

The surname arose from either the name Hugo or from another short form of a compound with MHG Hug- ( " mind, spirit, mind " ) first name ( for example Hugbald, Hu ( g) bert, etc.). This Haug is one of the so-called patronymics. The first bearer of the name was so the ... ' named in distinguishing purposes simply by his father as a son.

Rarely is a derivative of Middle High German houc, hill 'possible.

Variants

The name Haug is particularly common in Germany and Austria. Other forms are Hauck and Huch, and a diminutive suffix, Huchel.

In Baden and the German-speaking Switzerland, however, is known rather not diphthongierte form Hug.
