Haut-Katanga Province (proposed)

Upper Katanga (Original title: skin - Katanga ) is a district in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with more than 1.6 million inhabitants. It is part of the province of Katanga. Capital of Upper Katanga Lubumbashi is a city of millions, which is the provincial capital of Katanga simultaneously.

Geography

To the north and west of Upper Katanga borders on the remaining territory of the province of Katanga, which consists of the districts of Kolwezi, Lualaba, Upper Lomami and Tanganyika. In the south and east of the country on the eastern border of Zambia and Upper Katanga also Lake Mweru is.

History

According to the administrative reclassification of the country, which was provided for in the Constitution of 2005, the province of Katanga should be split and Upper Katanga province get the status. As one of the 26 provinces, the area should get an independent management and private regional parliament. In January 2011 this reform, however, was virtually canceled by a controversial constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila. This Upper Katanga remains for the time being continue to be a subordinate district of Katanga.

Economy

The region is part of the so-called Copperbelts, the most important copper mining region of Africa.
