Hazaribagh (Hindi: हज़ारीबाग़, Hazaribag [ hʌzɑ ː ri ː ˌ bɑ ː ɣ ]; Hazaribag also ) is the capital of the eponymous administrative district in the Indian state of Jharkhand and is located 91 km from Ranchi away. The population is around 142,000 ( 2011 census ).

Etymologically, the word is Hazaribag from the two Hindi words, hazar ( " thousand " ) and bagh ( " garden " ) and is therefore the " city of a thousand gardens '.

During the Second World War was at a place Parole Camp for German civilians. There were June 1942, 36 women, 5 men and 16 children. In the fall of these women and children have moved into one of the family camp.

The city is surrounded by the Hazaribagh plateau at an altitude of about 670 meters above sea level.

Hazaribag is the seat of the Diocese of Hazaribag.

The site was chosen in 2013 due to the effluents from tanneries around 250 by the environmental organization Blacksmith Institute as one of the most contaminated places in the world.
