Héctor Babenco

Héctor Babenco ( born February 7, 1946 in Mar del Plata, Argentina) is an Argentine film director.

Life

Babenco was born as the son of Jewish immigrants of Ukrainian and Polish descent in Buenos Aires. At 18, he began to be interested in Beat writers and existential philosophy. He hoofed it for seven years through Africa, Europe and North America and has worked as an extra in Spanish and Italian spaghetti westerns.

Finally he came to Brazil in 1969, where he was fascinated and decided to become a filmmaker for the new Brazilian Cinema ( " Cinema Novo "). Brazil came in the 1960s under military dictatorship. Due to the sharp censorship of the junta exiled many of the Brazilian directors. Babenco other hand, remained in the country and learned the film craft in the turning of documentaries and short films and commercials. In 1975, he turned King of Night his first feature film. In 1978, he looked death threats and violent contradictions exposed to his filming of the drama Lucio Flavio. Despite the controversy, the film scored the fourth fastest grossing Brazilian film industry of all time and helped the " brasileiro portugués " as the language of the " Cinema Novo " to a renaissance.

Internationally known Babenco in 1981 through the film Asphalt sharks with Fernando Ramos Da Silva and Marilia Pera, in which he showed the dreary and hopeless lives of Brazilian street children. The film is de facto rather a documentary than a feature film, as its protagonists are real homeless children. Leading actor Fernando Ramos Da Silva in 1987 at the age of 19 years shot by police in São Paulo.

Pixote was the ticket to Hollywood for Babenco. Direct his first film there, The Kiss of the Spider Woman in 1985, was a resounding success. Lead actor William Hurt won the Oscar and Babenco was nominated for best director. Although he continued making films in the U.S., so he had but increased experience with the overweening arrogance of some producers in Hollywood do. His desire for artistic freedom eventually led him back to Brazil, where he turned in 2003 Carandiru.

Babenco is with the Brazilian actress Xuxa Lopes ( born 1953 ) married.
