Hector-Jonathan Crémieux

Hector Crémieux ( born November 10, 1828 in Paris, † September 30, 1892 ) was a French dramatist and librettist.

Crémieux, who was related to the jurist and politician Adolphe Crémieux, studied law in Paris. He participated as a lieutenant in the Civil Guard at the February Revolution of 1848 and was then in the civil service.

In 1851 he wrote with his brother Émile Crémieux an adaptation of Schiller FIESCO for the French stage. Other dramas he wrote with Adolphe d' Ennery, Eugène Woestyn, Ernest Bourget, Charles- Theodore Cogniard, Jean -Hippolyte Cogniard, the Comtesse de Martel, Ludovic Halévy, Philippe Gille, Henri Bocage and Ernest Blum.

As a librettist, he worked for Jacques Offenbach, Léo Delibes, Hervé and Léon Vasseur. His most famous work is the libretto for Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld. In total he wrote more than forty-five Thetaterstücke and libretti. In 1864 he was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour.
