Hedwig of Brandenburg, Duchess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel

Hedwig of Brandenburg ( born February 23, 1540 in Coelln, † October 21, 1602 in Wolfenbüttel ) was Margrave of Brandenburg, and was by marriage Duchess of Brunswick and Lüneburg and Duchess of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel.

Life

Hedwig was a daughter of the Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg (1505-1571) from his second marriage with Hedwig (1513-1573), daughter of King Sigismund I of Poland.

She married on 25 February 1560 in Colin on the Spree Duke Julius of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel ( 1528-1589 ). The couple had met at the court of the Margrave Johann in Kuestrin where Julius had fled from his wayward father.

After the reconciliation of Julius with his father Henry II, who had reluctantly consented to the Protestant marriage of his son, the couple lock Hesse and Schladen received more than suitable as a residence.
