History

Schladen was first mentioned in 1154 as " Schladheim " ( settlement in the swamp ). The old village center was protected by a double ditch, the eastern boundary was the Wedde.

The story Schladens is closely related to the Ottonian royal palace Werla whose remains are found about 2 km north of the town. In Schladen was her Versorgungshof, the forerunner of today's domain. Just as the Palatinate fell to about 1200, also fell this system. Only the Bishop of Hildesheim Udo expanded it to the castle and stood for a Vogt -in. That was Eiko Dorstadt of which the name " of Schladen " gave himself. The castle remained until 1353 in the possession of the Counts of Schladen, was Bishop Henry III. purchased for the diocese of Hildesheim, came together with the village after the Hildesheimer pin feud in 1523 in the possession of the Wolfenbüttel Dukes and fell in 1643 with the restitution of the Great pin to back this. After the great fire of 1699, the Catholic church was built on the site in 1728. In the late 18th century, the domain was a park, gardens and a sheep.

1803 fell by Schladen Reichsdeputationshauptschluss together with the bishopric of Hildesheim to Prussia, in 1815, however, at Hanover, with its annexation in 1866 it again became Prussian. 1885, came to the district of Goslar, with which it was reclassified in 1941 from Prussia to Braunschweig.

Built in 1750 large sheepfold of the domain is now home to the Municipality administration, the village community center and clubhouse. In home house "Alte Mühle", visitors will find archaeological finds of the Palatinate, including their " hot air stones ", the forerunner of a central heating.

In " Bocla ", the ancient place of judgment ( the today's " bookstore " ) was born in 1784 probably the most famous Schladener, Leo von Klenze, the light of the world. He later rose to the court architect of King Ludwig I of Bavaria on, was knighted, and was one of the most important architects of classicism ( Glyptothek, Propylaea, Alte Pinakothek, Walhalla, building design for the New Hermitage in Saint Petersburg). Extensive information on his work can be found upstairs in the home building " Old Mill".

On March 1, 1974 Schladen was assigned to the district Wolfenbüttel in exchange for Bad Harzburg. Together with the city Hornburg and the communities Gielde and Werlaburgdorf ( Werla ) was the Municipality Schladen, which was dissolved on November 1, 2013, and converted into the unified community Schladen - Werla.

At the cemetery, the actor Hubert von Meyerinck is buried.
