Hedwig of Kalisz

Hedwig of Kalisz (Polish Jadwiga Kaliska; * to 1266, † December 10, 1339 in Stary Sacz ) was from 1293 by marriage Duchess of Cujavia in Brest and Sieradz, from 1306 Duchess of the Kingdom of Poland and Queen of Poland from 1320.

Life

She was born the daughter of Duke Bolesław the Pious from the large Polish line of the Piast dynasty, and his wife Helena Jolenta of Hungary, daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary and Maria Laskarina, Byzantine princess of the house Laskaris.

On January 6, 1293, she married the future King of Poland, Władysław, Duke of Cujavia in Brest and Sieradz, from the Kujawy line of the Piast dynasty.

After the death of King Przemysław of Poland, who was her cousin, took King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia power in Poland and her husband had to leave the country. Hedwig hid with her children in Radziejów. After four years in exile, Władysław returned to Poland to fight against the Bohemian kings. After the death of Wenceslas II and Wenceslas III. Władysław could reclaim the throne and pursued with the support of Hedwig a policy of unification of the Polish lands. They even convinced the Bishop of Cracow Johann Muskata, one of the biggest adversary and Władysław on January 20, 1320 have been Władysław and Jadwiga in the cathedral of Krakow by Janisław, the new Archbishop of Gniezno, crowned King and Queen of Poland.

After the death of her husband, in 1333, Hedwig moved back to Clare nuns of Stary Sacz, where she died on December 10, 1339 and was also buried.

The couple had five children:

  • Cunegonde ( ca 1295/1331-33 ), married about 1310 to the Schweidnitzer Duke Bernhard II, from 1328 with Duke Rudolph I of Saxe- Wittenberg, by marriage Duchess of Saxe- Wittenberg and Schweidnitz;
  • Stefan ( 1296-1300/1306 ), died young;
  • Władysław ( 1297-1311/1312 ), died young;
  • Elizabeth (1305/1380), married to King Charles I of Hungary, by marriage Queen of Hungary;
  • Hedwig ( 1306-1309/1320-1325 ), died young;
  • Casimir (1310/1370), King of Poland from 1333 onwards;
