Bernard of Åšwidnica

Bernhard II of Schweidnitz (* about 1288, † May 6, 1326 ), Lord of Fürstenstein and Jawor, was from 1301 to 1326 Duke of Świdnica and Jawor.

Origin and family

Bernhard was born into the family of Silesian Piast dynasty. His parents were Duke Bolko I of Schweidnitz and Beatrix ( † 1316 ), daughter of Margrave Otto V of Brandenburg. Bernard's siblings were, inter alia:

  • Bolko II († 1341 )
  • Judith / Jutta († 1320), married to Stephen I of Lower Bavaria
  • Elisabeth ( † after 1341 ), married to Duke Wratislaw IV of Pomerania
  • Anna († 1332/34 ), abbess in chasing

Bernhard was married I the Elbow- from the House of Piast Kujawy since about 1310 Cunegonde († 1333), daughter of the Polish king Władysław. From this marriage the children come from:

After Bernard's death his widow married Cunegonde in two married in 1328 Duke Rudolf I of Saxe- Wittenberg.

Life

After his father's death in 1301 his sons Bolko I. Bernard, Henry and Bolko were minors. Therefore, they initially were under the guardianship of her uncle Hermann of Brandenburg, who entrusted this task to his captain, Hermann von Barby ( Barboy ). After the death of the guardian Hermann of Brandenburg in 1308 the now mature Bernhard ruled the Duchy at the same time for his younger brothers. Henry was of age in 1312 and received Jawor that an independent duchy was again Bolko received 1321 Münsterberg, whose Duke line he founded. In Bernhard accounted for the Duchy Schweidnitz.

Along with eight other Silesian dukes Bernhard in 1320 complained to the Holy See in Avignon on the introduction of Peter 's Pence in the Breslau diocese in the new form of per capita tax, which was levied until then per family. 1322 fought Bernhard and other Silesian knights during the Battle of Mühldorf together with the Czech king John of Luxembourg on the part of the Wittelsbach under Louis IV the Bavarian.

Duke Bernhard was a great patron of the company founded by his father Bolko I. monastery Grüssau. After his death he was buried in a grave in the high choir of the monastery church, which was 1661/62 laid, presumably because it hindered the liturgical celebrations. 1738 were transferred to the new chapel Prince Bernhard's bones.
