Heinrich Brewer

Henry Brewer, also Henry of Puffendorf ( born September 6, 1640 Puffendorf, † 1713 in Aachen ) was a German Catholic theologian and historian.

Life and work

Originally from the small town Puffendorf at Jülich and therefore in some mentions also Henry of Puffendorf called Henry Brewer attended as a student, run by Jesuits Epiphany School in Cologne. He then underwent training as a licentiate in theology and was ordained a priest in 1664.

After a short stint as a tutor Brewer initially took a job as a vicar at the then Cassius - pin, now the Bonner Münster, and in addition from 1667 as a lecturer in theology at the University of Cologne. In 1669 he was appointed to the convent wholesale Nazareth in Cologne- Sachsenhausen, which he served as priest and rector until 1682. On December 29, 1682, he finally moved to Aachen, where he served as pastor at St. Jakob was active until shortly before his death in 1713.

Since his time as Rector of the nunnery he turned to with great relish historical studies. So he introduced already supplemented by Christian Adolf Tulden and originally authored by Johann Adolf Brahel multi-volume historical work about the events in the years 1661 to 1671 continued in several editions, and added that a number of memoranda, letters, and contracts with. For this he received the honorary title of " imperial historiographer ". Shortly before his move to Aachen, he published a biographical essay on Thomas a Kempis, in which he strongly held the opinion, among others, after thorough research, that in copyright dispute over the work " Imitation of christ " (Cologne, 1681) the author Kempen authorship shall be awarded to doubt.

In addition, Henry Brewer devoted partly also of poetry. So he made in 1668 in Bonn with a volume of poetry attracted attention, which he dedicated to the Archbishop Maximilian Henry of Bavaria. In Aachen, he wrote a play with victory chants, partly in German, partly in Latin, which was performed at the celebration of the liberation from the Turks after the siege of Vienna. It is so widely known, one of the few theater pieces that have been preserved in Aachen from that time.
