Heinrich Menu von Minutoli

Johann Heinrich Karl Menu, since 1820 Freiherr von Minutoli ( born May 12, 1772 in Geneva, † September 16, 1846 in Berlin) was a Prussian officer, last lieutenant general and royal tutor, explorer and archaeologist.

Origin

The Minutoli family was originally from Lucca and emigrated in the 17th century in Switzerland. Henry was the son of Daniel of Minutoli (1701-1811) and his wife Isabelle, born of Lucadou ( 1739-1816 ).

Life

Johann Heinrich Karl Menu initially received private lessons, then attended 1782-1784 high school in Karlsruhe, was subsequently trained by an Austrian engineer captain in military matters and entered 1786 with fourteen years in the Prussian military service one on the help of his uncle Ludwig Moritz von Lucadou, a Prussian captain and later major general. He served two years as a Bombardier in the field artillery corps, then received from 1789 as an officer in the stationed in Magdeburg Fusilier Battalion " Legat " No. 20 Since the cadet training mentally did not satisfy him, he learned during this time in addition also Greek, Latin, Italian and English. On May 17, 1790 was promoted to second lieutenant Minutoli. He then took 1792/93 in the campaign against France in part and fought at Pirmasens, on Schänzel and at the storming of Bitsch. Here he was severely wounded and remained until his death as a result of this injury in the use of his right arm disabled.

For this reason, he was appointed in 1794 as a staff captain, teachers and trainers to the nobles cadet corps in Berlin, since 1797, he served as director of education. In addition to Ernst von Ruchel, Gerhard von Scharnhorst, Albrecht Karl von Hake, Georg Ludwig von Reinbaben, Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Aderkas, the brothers Reinhold and Moritz von Scholer, Professors Christian Kufahl and Christian August supporters he was a founding member of the Militairischen society; he counted alongside the General Ruchel among the first proponents of universal conscription.

1810 appointed him Friedrich Wilhelm III. tutor to the nine -year-old Prince Carl. He continued in this position until March 11, 1820.

Minutoli was greatly interested in the archeology. After Prince Carl had reached the age of majority, Minutoli undertook numerous trips abroad. In 1820 he was entrusted with the leadership of the expedition, which traveled to August 1821 at the expense of the government of Egypt. It accompanied him, among other things, the naturalist Wilhelm Friedrich Hemprich and Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, the architect Ludwig Theodor Liman, who died on the hardships of the journey after arriving in Alexandria on 13 December 1820 and the Orientalist and theologian Johann Martin Augustin Scholz, there separated from society and embarked to Cairo. On the return was the greater part of the collections Minutolis, 97 boxes, lost in shipment from Trieste to Hamburg when the chartered for the transport sailors sank " Gottfried " during the night of March 12, 1822 in the Elbe estuary in a hurricane. Only 20 boxes that were transported by land, reached Berlin. They were purchased by the King of Prussia for 22,000 thalers, and formed the basis of the new Egyptian Museum Berlin. Minutoli was appointed a member of the Academy of Sciences with the title of lieutenant-general, took soon after his resignation and retired to an estate near Lausanne. He was buried in the Old Garrison Cemetery in Berlin -Mitte.

For his services Minutoli received on December 2, 1845 the Red Eagle, First Class. He was also since 1820 in honor and legal Knights of St John.

Family

Minutoli married 1801 Charlotte of Woldeck ( 1781-1863 ), the daughter of General Leutnantn Alexander Friedrich von Woldeck ( 1720-1795 ) and Louise Ernestine von Weltzien ( 1766-1834 ). He had three sons with her:

  • Adolph, Chamberlain in Meiningen
  • Julius et al Berlin police chief and ambassador to the Persian court
  • Alexander art collector.

In 1812 he was divorced and married in 1820 in Trieste, the Countess Wolfardine von der Schulenburg, who accompanied him on his expedition to Egypt and wrote a travelogue, appeared in several translations.
