Heinrich Vogt (astronomer)

Heinrich Vogt, ( born October 5, 1890 in Gau- Algesheim, Rhineland -Palatinate, † January 23, 1968 in Heidelberg ) was a German astronomer.

Life

Vogt was the youngest child of the farmer Philip Vogt and his wife Margaretha, born storm. Married Henry Vogt was born to Margaret Brown. Both had a son and a daughter.

Vogt began after graduating from high school in 1911 at the autumn school ( Kronberger Hof ) in Mainz for the winter semester in 1911/12 at the University of Heidelberg with Max Wolf, whose assistant he was since 1912, with the study of astronomy, mathematics and physics. His academic career he continued in 1919 with a doctorate on the topic " On the theory of Algolveränderlichen " and 1921 with the Habilitation ( topic: " Photometric studies and brightness provisions hours in the cluster and χ Persei ") and his inaugural lecture on the evolution of stars continues. In 1926 he was appointed extraordinary professor in Heidelberg and was simultaneously Observer at the Badische observatory Heidelberg king chair.

1929 Vogt was appointed as full professor at the University of Jena and was also from 1929 to 1933 Director of the University Observatory Jena. In 1931 he became a member of the NSDAP and subsequently worked as a political leader and steward of the NSDAP district leadership at the University. In 1933 he became a member of the SA, where he rose to become Obersturmführer. In 1933 he was appointed as full professor at the University of Heidelberg, where he succeeded the late Max Wolf in 1932 and was from 1933 to 1945 director of the Heidelberg State Observatory king chair.

In 1945 he was removed as director of the observatory, but retained until his retirement in 1957, the professorship. He spoke in his lectures a wider audience to, wrote popular scientific monographs, such as " spiral nebulae " (1946 ), "The construction of the universe " (1949 ) or " the cosmos and God " (1951) and finally turned cosmological and natural philosophical questions about he in his last books "Out Galactic stellar systems and the structure of the world at large " (1960 ), "The structure of the cosmos as a whole" (1961) and themed "Being in the view of the scientist " (1964).

After Heinrich Vogt of Vogt uniqueness theorem is named (or Vogt- Russell theorem).

Vogt discovered on December 9, 1912 an asteroid was named after the mother and relatives Vogt's name ( 735 ) Marghanna. His colleague, Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth in Heidelberg called a discovered on October 6, 1937 asteroid ( 1439) Vogtia and two on January 8, 1937 asteroid discovered by Vogt's wife ( 1410) and Margret ( 1411 ) Brauna.
