Heinrich Wawra von Fernsee

( Born Jindřich Blazej Vavra; born February 2, 1831 in Brno, Moravia, † May 24 1881 in Baden near Vienna) Heinrich Wawra Knights of Fernsee was an Austrian ship's doctor, botanist and explorer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wawra ".

Life and work

Heinrich Wawra was the youngest of five brothers. His father was a miller by trade. From 1849 to 1855 he studied medicine and botany at the University of Vienna. After graduating, he joined on December 6, 1855 in the imperial navy, which was under the command of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria.

From 1856 to 1871 he was a ship's doctor on different schooners, frigates and corvettes, on which he, to Gibraltar, Madeira, Tenerife, Brazil, Cape of Good Hope, Angola, Ascension Island, the Cape Verde Islands, Java, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China Japan, Hawaii, South America, New Zealand, Australia, Ceylon, Hong Kong and Macau sailed.

From 1872 to 1873 he undertook in the company of Prince Ferdinand Philipp and Ludwig August of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha his first world tour. After retiring from the Navy in 1879 he went on his second world tour.

After Heinrich Wawra the Bromeliad genus Fernseea and Gesnerienart Cyrtandra wawrae are named.
